Have you ever been so focused on the item you are searching for in a store, you don’t realize who is walking up to you? Have you ever been so focused that you launch into a question before fully recognizing who you might be addressing? Well this happened to us a few days ago.

Walmart, Do You Work Here
Or should I say, we did this. We were shopping for some cheap prop items to use in an upcoming art project. And when I say cheap, by that I mean we were shopping at Walmart. (Yes, Walmart.) We were so focused literally walking up and down aisles, we grabbed the first set of feet we heard (I emphasize the word ‘heard’) coming in our direction.
By the time we look up from the dedicated scanning of shelves, we realize that we were not addressing a store employee. But here is the kicker: I certainly do not think we deserved the response this man gave us. He immediately said to us before we could recover, “I’m wearing a $100 dollar shirt. Do I look like I work here?”
Now we are in a shock of a different type all together, a type apart from the horror that we accidentally did not ask our question of a store employee. We took some time to gather ourselves as we quickly sauntered away from the perturbations of this bowling-ball of a man.
As we collected ourselves we began to share our thoughts regarding the mans reaction. Some of these thoughts were:
- If you are buying $100 shirts, why are you shopping at Walmart?
- Maybe you wouldn’t have to shop at Walmart if you stopped buying $100 ugly shirts such as that…
- That shirt cost $100? They must have been selling it by the yard because it doesn’t look like it’s worth $100. (Note: the man was a 5’10″ mass of roundness akin jello spawned from a fish bowl mold.)
- Just say no.
We are really sorry for not paying attention enough to know who was approaching us. However, we don’t believe we deserve the level of animosity we encountered either. We are all shopping in Wal-Barf, for god’s sake.
We also like to think we are not alone in our dislike of this man’s actions. We are curious to know how you would have responded to him having face the same or similar situation?
