There are 3 places in the DC-Baltimore area that are guaranteed to be busy on a Saturday afternoon;  make that 4 places:

Taylor, Jeff, and I discussed some tricks of the trade in a chance meeting at a nearby Guitar Center

While I was at Guitar Center–looking for a hard case for transporting my Akai MPD26–I was waiting like a lot of other slugs. With the shear numbers that were in the store, it was going to be a wait despite the store appearing to be well staffed.

I saw this young couple playing around with the Numark DJ controller with Serato Itch. The lady of the couple was making a valiant effort in pushing her way through the controls. I leaned in and said, “not as easy as it looks is it.” We all shared a laugh. But the best is what happened next.

For the next 2 hours, was an impromptu deejay skill set and music philosophy discussion. I found out that Jeff is one the members of the band, Wasabi; if you are into rock, especially the sound of the ‘hair’ bands and alternative sound of the 80s, check them out: www.myspace.com/wasabimusic. Taylor is a deejay.

We all agreed that this area, so rich with music traditions, heritage and fans who claim to love music, there is a desert of support for groups, bands, deejay/producers who are doing original works or spinning something other than whats at the top of these self fulfilling charts of the moment, or to see the worn out sets of cover bands (sorry folks). Wasabi seems to have made a concerted effort NOT to do cover or the same old thing that is on the radio 15 times in an hour. They have had some coverage by Baltimore’s 98 Rock; pretty cool interview guys. And–how this Guitar Center conversation started–Jeff’s wife, Taylor, who is making her charge in to electronic and deejaying music by wanting to combine sounds and focus on the folk side of rock, for instance combining Prince with Joni Mitchell.

And all this because I had this mile long honey dew list my girlfriend gave me and this was my one diversion for the day. For me it was inspiring.  Okay, I lie–spending the afternoon in music stores and home improvement stores for a geek and engineer like me is bliss.  DOH!  I guess you now know where I didn’t go over the weekend…  LOL!

As some of you know, other parts of our home are going through quite the dramatic transformation. The studio has as well.

We have re-arranged the furniture and will be adding some new paint soon. So there may be a hiatus of new beats. Trust me though, the wait will be worth it.

One of the other things that happened at WMC 2011 and Future Classics 4, was the first public performance of “Her Freedom Song”. This original by Stylo featuring Tunde is now available through CDBaby. Other outlets like iTunes and Amazon will have the song for download in the coming days.

It was a fun filled night. I went out to support Gallery 788 as they hosted their first erotic art show and the art of 801 Photography, an endeavor by the already accomplished artist, Tunde.

At the show, it was nice to see several notables including Red Hoop Skirt designer Scott Pickford (more on that in another post), DJ/producer Neil Kurland, and DJ/painter/producer Terry Thompson. The last two were gracious enough to come by even though their show was later that night. The art show featured everything from spoken word poetry to burlesque dancers.

At The Get Down (old Fletcher’s), Neil kicked then night off right. That is to say that the floor was jumpin’ and more than warmed up by the time Jay-J took to the decks. The place was hopping so well with so many fun people I forgot to snap a few photos from the night. But I’m sure Neil, Terry, and crew have plenty to share.

Stylo's Getting Into Things

Well I seem to always get into things. I really don’t plan it–it just happens. Does this ever happen to any of you?

So what am I into now? Well, several.

But one is you will find me contributing in a variety of ways from time to time to the blog, 801Studio. This new blog by Tunde will feature her short ‘stories’. These stories will only be in photo form with no words or captions besides. So it is up to your wonderful imaginations to fill in the proverbial blanks with detail. Is a picture worth a thousand words? Well comment on the submissions and lets see…

I have also almost completed my new home studio. I’m excited about this because I can get back to the production work that was started some weeks ago that since has started gathering dust. But even among the construction dust, some music work has been occurring.
