Seven Days by Terry Thompson

Fever / Oil on Canvas / 48"x48" / 2012

Some people know him as dad, husband, or cousin.  Others know him as a DJ, song writer and producer, or even major WMC party creator.  Still others may know him as a gifted painter who has his works hanging in Thurgood-Marshall Baltimore Washington International Airport.  This accomplished man is Terry Thompson.

In the Forward of the book Terry Thompson Opere 1993-2003 he is described as a person “who expresses a part of their creativity in art: people who brings to the art what they experience-practically and interiorly–in daily life and who brings back to life the enlightenment, those dimensions that only an artistic creative spirit may have access to.”  Now we have access to a number of his more recent pieces.

Saturday May 19 will be the opening party of his newest exhibition, Seven Days.  Hosted at Baltimore’s Galerie Francoise it is our turn to get to know the Terry the painter.

Thx Miami

Thx Miami

A mix of Deep, Soulful, and Jackin' House with just a touch of Electro

It has really been hard to distill the feelings I have about my trip to Miami and WMC 2012. I am filled with such gratitude and a sense of humility by the wonderful people I have been able to meet; fans, producers, DJs, photographers, fashion designers, media, etc. I especially feel lucky in meeting the people who’s work I admire and try to emulate. And to find that almost every one of them to a person is down-to-earth and easy going.

What also nice is to find often the degree of separation is not as great as I imagined.

I’ll definitely expand on many experiences over the next few days. However, this mix seems to capture much of the feeling going from Deep and Soulful House to Jackin’ with just a touch of Electro. It also features a live remix of “Bulletproof” by La Roux and Collective Groove combined with Jamar Hughes’ “Bump Party”.

Thx Miami!

Ball So Hard

Alex Serena and Stylo

Italian Singer Alex Serena and Stylo share a photo op.

This is going down in my book as one of the best WMC years ever. I don’t know if this is because I am more aware of the people that I am running into than in previous years, or if it is because of a collective positive feeling that many have they will succeed even through the worst the world may be delivering. It matters not.

The list of Electronic Music favorites and heavy hitters I have been introduced to in just two days is absolutely staggering. In addition, I had my first interview with VIPtv. It was a small spot, but sometimes that’s all it takes; links to the clip are forth coming. And even though I am not a huge fan of most of his music, it was still a huge honor to meet and be introduced to Paul Oakenfold. The guy still parties hard too.

In fact regarding partying, miss Trisha Benton and I must look like we are trying to apply to ‘Ball So Hard’ academy the past few days. It’s been a fun riot getting to know the singer songwriter better by networking many of the same events. I think it is safe to say that there will be many future music collaborations beyond this WMC 2012 celebration.

She and I are all set for our two shows Friday at 2PM (Liquor Lounge) and at 10pm (Honey Doo).  We are absolutely excited for these opportunities…

My Words On Your Words

Many of us have heard the phrase, ‘sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.’ Well I don’t know if the phrase is true or not, but it has certainly come up for endless debate in the modern psychology community. And I’d rather talk about “Your Words” anyway.

What I’m talking about is the new song from the sultry voiced Rae and her compatriots deejay/producers on the song, Studio Apartment. Did I mention that I will be performing on the same stage as Studio Apartment for this year’s 4th Annual Future Classics Party at the Winter Music Conference? Get tickets at Wantickets.com. Did I also mention that a partner in dance music crime, Terry Thompson (Code Red/Defected) and I working on bringing Studio Apartment to DC the weekend prior to WMC? But I digress.

Rae offers up another solid dance tune in what is becoming a river of solid dance tunes. Studio Apartment offers their usually stellar production chops to the piece. From a deejay perspective this is a great song to use in the middle of a build-up set in route to what ever top-of-the-set banger you are traveling towards. Check out the official video…

Erotic Art Show and Then Jay-J

It was a fun filled night. I went out to support Gallery 788 as they hosted their first erotic art show and the art of 801 Photography, an endeavor by the already accomplished artist, Tunde.

Flier I

At the show, it was nice to see several notables including Red Hoop Skirt designer Scott Pickford (more on that in another post), DJ/producer Neil Kurland, and DJ/painter/producer Terry Thompson. The last two were gracious enough to come by even though their show was later that night. The art show featured everything from spoken word poetry to burlesque dancers.

At The Get Down (old Fletcher’s), Neil kicked then night off right. That is to say that the floor was jumpin’ and more than warmed up by the time Jay-J took to the decks. The place was hopping so well with so many fun people I forgot to snap a few photos from the night. But I’m sure Neil, Terry, and crew have plenty to share.

In the meantime, here are a few samples from the erotic art show at 788.

It was a blast of a time. Tunde's art featured at Gallery 788's 1st Erotic Show.

One of the fliers used in the lead up to the show. This features one of the pieces, called "Vonat" in Hungarian, that is available. With out the writing across it, of course.
