1st Not 2nd–Friday That Is

Our Lust4Life project has always worked to bring you some of the best music selectors from Baltimore that you might not have had a chance to hear.  We will also work with various charitable causes from time to time making our party a party for a cause.

At L4L we also know that you have a life outside of party going.  So we have worked to be accessible and affordable–thus the intimate locations that L4L has been hosted at through the years.  In that regard, we are moving away from the 2nd Friday of the month.

In February, L4L will be on the 1st Friday of the month, Feb 3.  We are still at Dionysus, 3rd (top) floor and we still have great music and dancing planned for you.  And for Friday nights after you’ve had a stressful week at work it’s supposed to be this easy.  Just come up the stairs, get a drink, order some food, and dance.  It doesn’t matter if you are an old friend or a new friend, you are welcome at Lust4Life.  it doesn’t matter if you are a Baltimore native or just in town for the night, this is one of the best way to burn off the stress and calories.

So tell your friends about the awesome pressure reliever, Lust4Life.  What better way to kick off your weekend?

Have you heard? My crew, ScandalDC, is starting a new night at Eden. Located in the heart of downtown at 1716 I street NW, Washington DC, the multi-level Eden has a had a reputation to be one of the top places in the city to get your boogie on. It’s our first Lust4Life of the 2012 year and we are kickin’ it off with some down-home b-more flavor.  Craig Nasteef has been a maestro for some time.  He is throwing down with B-Side and I this Friday and he is bringing an all-vinyl set.

Yep,  all vinyl!!!

In the mean time, above is an sample of some Acid and Minimal House from him.

Lust4Life featuring Craig Nasteef

An all vinyl DJ set...

I’ll be slipping in a few new original sexy-cool pieces that I have co-produced with Toronto based DJ and producer, Melanie Sutherland.  B-Side also will be laying down some beats, Elly D Funk helps me host, and Ange has the perfect pour.

So, don your dancing shoes.  Bring your girl friends and your guy friends.   We are gonna have a House Party, L4L style….

Added for future L4L line-ups:

March – Mark  Castley (Blue Gritt Records)

April – DJ Kochi (ScandalDC, iNK House)

I’ll Be Makin’ Beats For A Thousand Years

While that is more than just a mild over statement, what isn’t reaching is the spirit behind it.

Typically, this time of year gets people reflective, nostalgic, thankful, etc.  And I will get to those items in this space, just not today.  Today I would like to remind everyone to keep going and don’t let narrow minds, difficult times, SOPA, nothing rob you of the flow of the music that is within you.  Do this no matter what might be happening outside.

I know I will.  And thus why I repeat the phrase in the title.

I got ScandalDC Thursday at Gazuza (Jan 5th).  I will feature some pre-release music that I have been working on with Toronto DJ and producer, Melanie Sutherland (Broken Records).

Saturday (Jan 7th), the entire ScandalDC (iLLogic, Kochi, FugAmI, and myself) crew will be back with guest music man Kryogen (Terry Hsiung).  It might be soon after NYE, however, you are not going to want to miss this rare collaborative night.

Friday (Jan 13th), Lust4Life in Baltimore starts off the new year with a bang with local maestro Craig Nasteef joining B-Side, Elly D Funk, and myself for some down and dirty House beats.

Anniething Goes To Foundation

DJ vANNIEty Kills

With her, just about Anniething Goes...

Here I go with another double in DC.  Thursday it is my turn up with ScandalDC’s Thursday at Gazuza, our weekly series.  I have some sleepers that I’ll be playing for you.  So start your weekend with me.

And make sure you return on Saturday night for Foundation 9.  This time, our monthly features DJ vANNIEty Kills.  Annie is a master of beats, spanning sets from House to Drum and Bass.  She has shared the stage with legends such as LTJ Bukem at U Street Music Hall and played to the auditory delights of Donovan House roof top affairs.

As her bio points out, “As part of a burgeoning class of top gay and lesbian DJs in the capital city who attract praise from all social avenues, vANNIEty Kills is helping bridge gaps, open doors, and unify the city in the gospel of Parliament and Funkadelic, “One Nation Under a Groove.”"

The Cat Is Out of the Bag for Lust4Life Scorpio Tryst 8

Lazer Libby of Lazerbitch

Lazer Libby of Lazerbitch performs at Lust4Life Scoprio Tryst 8

I was trying so hard to push this without letting the secret out. However, my special guest who was supposed to be a secret let the cat out of the bag herself, sooooooooo….

YES! I am happy to have Lazer Libby of Lazerbitch (www.lazerbitchmusic.com) performing for my birthday-fund-raising soiree.

If you are unfamiliar with Libby she is 1/2 of the duo group Lazerbitch, Max Houston being the other.  Their music has been in the mix and in air play on stations in markets such as NYC (z100), and Baltimore (92Q and interviews with 98 Rock). In addition, Libby has worked with some other regional stars such as Born-I (DC), Claire Hux (B-more), and DJ Booman.

So yeah.  Catch her my Scorpio Tryst 8 night at Lust4Life.  11.11.11 at Dionysus (3rd floor).

BSB – It’s the Same and Different

“It’s the same and different.”  This was the refrain of someone at one of my shows as they described my music.  I had to think about it for a minute and yet it makes since.

Stylo During Speakeasy

Work that mixer!

I might start using that statement when I get the question, “How would you describe your music?”  The fact of the matter House Music is almost everyone’s music whether they know it or not–all this from humble beginnings in Chicago, Detroit, and NYC.  So I will tell you how I describe my music by telling what I do during a typical music set.

Contrary to what most people think DJs do, I do not JUST push a button and play someone else’s music–that is what a radio DJ does where as I am more of the performance variety. I actively take music, alter it, layer it with 1, 2, 3, or more other pieces of music, alter it some more, and then does it come out over the speakers to the dance floor.  I borrow heavily from Hip-Hop, Jazz, Funk, Rock, R&B, Latin, Afro-Latin, Afro, and whatever to mix with.  Some of the songs will have lyrics and hooks you recognize however not in the same form or over the same rhythm you are used to hearing.  Some will just have the bassline, drums, or other instruments as I continue to de-construct and re-construct on the fly.  (Subscribe to Stylo’s mixes and see Stylo’s Soundcloud page for examples.)

Performance DJs also tend to shop for rare records and songs.  Part of this stems from a desire to introduce people to new music, as a way to say, ‘hey, so-and-so isn’t the only person with talent’.  Also, increasingly the rarer tunes are a way to collaborate with other emerging artists, thereby increasing the visibility of all involved.  There is also this crazy overbearing nonsense major record label’s and distributor’s lobby has done to copyright–however, that is a different discussion altogether.

And about requests to a performance DJ (as if it was a radio call-in show), would you walk into a restaurant and tell the chef how to cook?

So relax. Bring your friends and settle into the mood of the night.  If you open your mind, your body will follow, leading you to the dance floor.  Likely you will find yourself leaving the club or bar at the end of the night with your friends, or with a new friend, smile on your face, legs tired for dancing a little too much, and saying in conversation, ‘hell yeah, that music was cool!  It was the same and different!”

Now for you BSB and what you’ll likely to hear in the mix with Stylo…  There is a lot more music, but I didn’t buy it, therefore not BSB.  However you can bet you are going to hear it.  :)
