BAMM! – No It’s Not An Adam West ‘Batman’ Action

It’s not Tommy Davidson as Howard Tibbs promoting “Funky Finger Productions” either. It is the official closing and after party of BIMA.fest, Baltimore Independent Music & Arts Festival.

B'more Arts and Music Massive

Where we close BIMA with an all-night party...

At BAMM, I will be joining some of the areas most known and those that should be known in a beautiful and wondrous party. Three areas of music, a cool patio area to chill, live art, body painting, vendors and artist are just some of the things to expect out of the night.

Here are some of the individuals on the playbill for the evening:

BAMM participants

Just some of your partners-in-crime this evening...

Before then if you wish to catch up with me, join me with my ScandalDC crew at Gazuza Lounge. I’ll be laying down another mean DJ set on Thursday, August 19th.

Thursdays at Gazuza

Every Thursday there is a Scandal at Gazuza Lounge...

This week Scandal Thursday features ScandalDC resident, DJ Kochi (August 12th).

BSB (Brand Spankin’ Bought) – Getting Into Things

Getting Into Things

Stylo's Getting Into Things

Well I seem to always get into things. I really don’t plan it–it just happens. Does this ever happen to any of you?

So what am I into now? Well, several.

But one is you will find me contributing in a variety of ways from time to time to the blog, 801Studio. This new blog by Tunde will feature her short ‘stories’. These stories will only be in photo form with no words or captions besides. So it is up to your wonderful imaginations to fill in the proverbial blanks with detail. Is a picture worth a thousand words? Well comment on the submissions and lets see…

I have also almost completed my new home studio. I’m excited about this because I can get back to the production work that was started some weeks ago that since has started gathering dust. But even among the construction dust, some music work has been occurring.

Here is what I’ve been getting into music-wise:

Pafuera Telaranas – Bebe
Broken Bells – Broken Bells
Point – Cornelius
In Love With A DJ (Incl. Baggi Begovic Remix) – Ron Carroll and CeCe Peniston
David Penn presents Tried & Tested EP Vol 1
Summer Breeze (Raw Artistic Soul Mixes) – N’Dinga Gaba feat. Sahffi
Funky Twins Ep – Erik Bo
Looking 2 Bounce EP – Demarkus Lewis

Catch the Dolphin

Last week, I was catching up with the goings-on of my buddy Dolphin (www.wardolphin.com). I was happy to see him still working hard. He has much to share.

Wardolphin Crate Digs

For fans of Stylo that do not know, Dolphin is a talented musician and song writer who resides in Baltimore. Having worked with him, I know of some of his exploits first hand. He would probably say that the Airmath project was the result of some early discussions and introductions that he and I had.

In any case, get your soul on. His Sex Spells EP is good stuff!

BSB (Brand Spankin’ Bought) — A 2 Hour Escher Drawing

So I was out with the fam last night for a chill night.  And we decided that we were going to try a movie.

We decided on the action-mystery-sci fi-thriller-dot-dot-dot (why do Americans still bother trying to classify something when they want to add more than three genres deep?) movie Inception.

Inception Movie

Inception

All I can say is, WHOA!  Now while I still in the glow of the morning after–well let’s call it extreme summer heat–I can say that I haven’t made up my mind about the film.  What can be safely said is that overall I liked it.  It certainly will prove to be much discussion fodder within a select circle of my friends who like to debate topics such as the themes in this film.

For you less cerebral out there, there is enough shoot-’em-up scenes to keep you interested.  The opening action sequence was just enough to wet your appetite for the Jason Borne-like scene that nicely juxtaposed the well written story line at the height of the film.

So to say it had something for everyone would not be a stretch. Without over doing it (read=allowing it to ruin the film due to unnecessary insertion), it even had a touch of nicely timed romantic comedy.  There was also a love story to bring it all together, this too without destroying the overall vibe of the film.

However, on the cerebral end–and what will lead to endless discussion–it was a 2 hour Escher drawing.  Sweet!

Now for your BSB.

Dave Mayer – Rhythm Section EP
Black Coffee feat. Thiwe – Crazy (Incl. Quentin Harris & Culoe De Song Mixes)
The Funk Ensemble (Prod. by Dario’Dattis) – Afrodisco
jOHNNYDANGEROUs – The Problem Continues Album Sampler
Nick Maurer – Lowride Remixes
Solid Groove / Subskrpt – Throwing Stones
Dimitri Max – Neighbors Hate We

Red Hoop Skirt

So as some of you might have noticed, a while back I was all in a tizzy about a Red Hoop Skirt.  This dress was the fascination of a friend of mine, Scott, and I during the winter season about 4 years ago.

Red Hoop Dress 1

Don't mind Mr Bones... Someone had to wear it during creation.

Imagine this elaborate mansion with expansive rooms, a changing vantage point of this gorgeous woman running through those rooms in nothing but a bra top and a partially see-through red hoop skirt.  It was visually stunning.  We both thought, ‘what man wouldn’t want a woman to wear something like that?’

Fast forward to 2010.  Being that both of us are geeks, engineers, and know hot lady friends that would actually wear such a garment, we (he more so than I) got the idea of attempting to recreating this garment.  There was only one problem; make that two!  One, we could not find an example of the skirt anywhere.  Apparently, the outfit was a stage prop specifically designed for the TV ad.  Two, there was some debate as to the length that we saw being 4 years removed and with lack of visual representation available.  Scott thought of a more traditional length where as I believed it to be much shorter.

No matter to him — he created both styles…

Red Hoop Dress 2

Quite a bit shorter, indeed!

This weekend their will be a not-so-secret photo shoot at a very secret location of both of the skirts from our dirty-geeky minds.  It is likely that one of them may also show up at the “Dying Light” novel release and book signing party later in the month of July.

The Abouraya Effect

I have been fortunate to deejay to along side some very interesting and talented people.  Some of these individuals are more noteworthy than people might expect and are often overlooked by the uneducated or the uninitiated.  Make no mistake, there are superstars right in your backyard.

Adam Abouraya

Adam plays tourist in San Francisco

One doesn’t find these gems by following crowds to the usual suspects like Lady Gaga or David Guetta; real fans of music, while they might enjoy some of that type of work, look past such uber-personalities.  If one has done this, you might have come across Adam Abouraya.  (See http://www.abouraya.com/)

Applying his craft in cities across the globe, he has played along side some of the those same personalities that some roll off their tongues as if they are next door neighbors. He is.  Adam is also a ScandalDC resident.

We, ScandalDC, will be gathering to help him celebrate his birthday at Gazuza Lounge (1629 Connecticut Av NW, Washington, DC) on Thursday, July 8th 9PM.  Why don’t you join us…

Remix, Reboot?

Remix, Reboot?

Change will come...

So here we are at mGrooves plotting the next steps. I was all ready to ramp up some more remixes, edits, etc and all the while concocting changes to this blog space, the attached websites, and mulling the wonderful changes in my personal life.  And then BOOM!

Much of it came falling apart…

I, along with many of us fans of electronic music, have witnessed the likely passing of a local Baltimore iconic landmark, Shorty’s, and thus the loss of the monthly home of Lust4Life for the past 3 years; and the strange halting of ORG after what seem a steady and progressive rise.  In short, the passing of older and newer.  This has been coupled with the destructive hacking of mGrooves and Lust4Life that rendered the website nearly unusable.

So now the re-arranging takes on a whole new scope.  And that is quite alright, albeit initially frustrating.  It now presents an opportunity to fix some tricky issues and to re-emerge wearing brand new clothes.  As the Semisonic song lyric goes in Closing Time, “every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end…”

With that idea, this is step one of an end of an older beginning and the beginning of some future end.  The blog has been reformulated.  I have used some of the old categories, In The Lab, Say What?, Where Ya At?, and Bleeding Ink.  But a new category has been added, BSB – Brand Spankin’ Bought.

Step two will be to integrate podcasts with this blog, thereby making them more accessible. Video podcasts (e.g. Scandal Guerrilla Video) will also be carried through this channel.  Other syndication will occur through Facebook and other public blog rolls.  Some cross publication between this blog and other blogs will occur as well.

Step three will be the launch of Lust4Life as a monthly podcast.  Will we be searching for a new home for the monthly?  Absolutely!  In fact the search has already begun.  In the mean time, you can still hear some of your favorite Lust4Life guest deejays along with some new peeps too.

Then we will be turning our attention to the over all websites of mGrooves and Lust4Life, and our email lists.  There will also be changes made to our mGrooves and Lust4Life merchandise store.  But stay tuned for those changes.  They will all be announced through this space.

All in all, we still want to bring you the best in high quality electronic music, parties, and people.  We see every set back as an opportunity to rise again and shine like a phoenix.

Feel free to comment and to send me feed back.
